Based in beautiful North Yorkshire, our vintage-inspired timepieces are assembled by hand in small batches to ensure our trademark attention to detail and craftsmanship. Our cockpit watches are now sold and loved all over the world.
This MKII version of the Air Ministry 8 Day clock was manufactured by S. Smith & Sons in 1941 and featured in the Supermarine Spitfire, Hawker Hurricane and Avro Lancaster.
It has been faithfully remodelled, featuring old radium numerals, vintage cathedral hands and a hallmarked 8mm 'onion' crown.
Fine quality and craftmanship are evident in the Swiss Ronda movement, sapphire cystal lens and chunky full-grain Italian leather strap.
The Sidewinder hallmark plays on the theme of reflection; looking back on design classics that have stood the test of time. The W in the Sidewinder logo is typeset to represent military chevrons. When turned on its side and mirrored, it creates our hallmark – a series of diamonds that represent beauty and endurance.
The Sidewinder Spitfire captures the spirit of vintage aviation. Its matt black case and dial, gold cathedral hands and railtrack chapter ring reflect the original cockpit clock.
The design carries all the hallmarks of a true pilot's watch or flieger, featuring a large dial, bold Arabic numerals and super luminescence for optimum legibility. Its oversized, onion-shaped crown is a classic feature of a flieger – as it allows navigators to operate the watch whilst wearing gloves.
The Sidewinder name traces its lineage back to the early days of the pocket watch. The winding mechanism for these early watches was typically positioned at 12.00 for open-face models and 3.00 for those with a protective hunter case. As styles changed and open-faced watches became increasingly popular, some hunter-case models lost the hinged lid but kept the winding mechanism on the side. This became the design standard for the modern-day wristwatch. Its name? The sidewinder.
Sidewinders are worn the world over - from Australia and New Zealand to Canada, the United States, Bermuda and beyond.
